This is the fifth and final segment in a multi-part series about the MSAD 51 Profile of a Learner (POL). As a reminder, the four tenets of the Greely POL include Effective Communicator, Creative Problem Solver, Lifelong Learner, and Global Citizen. This week, we focus on Global Citizenship.

When we think about what it means to be a Global Citizen, these are the key skills and desired actions we hope our students will continue refining over their K-12 educational journey:

    • Understanding how people and countries are interconnected and interdependent
    • Empathizing with others within, and beyond, our school community
    • Seeking knowledge and engagement with issues within, and beyond, our school community

These skills may appear to be self-explanatory, but how do they transfer from being merely something on paper to actionable in students' lives? Each grade span has provided age-appropriate, concrete examples of what it means to be an effective Global Citizen:

  • Students in grades PK-3 practice their ability to be global citizens by creating Hashi Maine art projects, engaging in African drumming, and assisting the local food pantry
  • Students in grades 4 & 5 practice global citizenship through service learning projects like Socktober and the local food pantry, learning about disadvantaged populations, and gaining understanding of migration, resettlement, and new generations through the I'm Your Neighbor welcoming library
  • Students in grades 6-8 demonstrate their ability to be effective global citizens when participating in the Best Buddies and Unified clubs that promote inclusion and lasting, meaningful relationships
  • Students in grades 9-12 practice the habits of global citizenship by analyzing and creating diverse works of art using the global language of visual and performing arts, building perspective, empathy, collaboration, and interpersonal skills
