In November 2019, the district's then-Elementary Education Steering Committee, as charged by the Strategic Plan, submitted its final recommendation to the Board of Directors as to the need for a new primary school.

The committee's high-level summary points were:
  • One campus is nice, but not the right fit for a growing district
  • Our district’s history and future enrollment trends indicate MSAD #51 is a four-facility district
  • We need the right number of facilities that can flex for the ups and downs of enrollment over time
  • This is an investment and solution for the long tem.
The steering committee in 2019 reported to the Board that they had considered the following factors as part of their recommendation:
  • Projected enrollment
  • Space Study
  • Developmental needs of students
  • Curricular goals
  • Sustainability of one campus model
  • Long-term investment
  • School size
  • Safety
  • Fiscal responsibility
  • Efficient use of space
  • Public Pre-K status and private partnerships
  • Balance of district facilities between the towns
That was in 2019. Since then, a third enrollment study completed in March 2022 confirmed what the previous studies in 2016 and 2019 had concluded: enrollment will continue to increase for at least the next decade by 350-400 more students, on top of an increase of 200 more students at MIW since 2016. A new school is not something that can wait any longer; it is absolutely essential for the long-term sustainability of MSAD #51's ability to operate and program effectively for all students.

A group of 20 staff members from MIW visited the proposed site for the new primary school at 80 Gray Road in North Yarmouth last week. The school would help alleviate cramped space conditions with 762 students in a facility built for 500-550 students maximum. Currently, there are 21 modular classrooms on site between MIW and GMS with an annual lease costing $335,000 and growing.

If you have not driven around the campus recently, I would encourage you to see for yourself how the rapid need for modulars in recent years has encroached on play space and open space at both MIW and GMS. A new primary school will allow facilities for PK-grade 8 to reset to comfortable conditions and reasonable enrollments. The high school will benefit by reclaiming outdoor space that is currently shared by elementary students, along with needed parking and traffic relief.

Over the last three years, an 18-member steering committee, two building committees, three site locations, and three architectural concept designs have been commissioned, studied, debated, and deliberated. The time has finally come to take action; our students and staff can no longer afford to wait.

Regards,
Jeff Porter

Give to Greely PTO's Parent Power Appeal

The Greely PTO Parent Power Appeal is our biggest and most important fundraiser! It is a quick and easy way to make a one-time contribution that works for your family. In 2021, we raised over $13,000 thanks to the generosity of MIW and GMS families! 100% of your tax-deductible donation helps provide K-8 teacher’s enrichment opportunities (such as classroom supplies, playground equipment, guest speakers, field trips, special events and more) for their students that help expand our kids' learning far beyond their classroom walls. No amount is too small. Please help us reach our goal of $13,000! More information can be found here or attached.
